What are population counts?
Population counts refer to data collected by the Census of Population and Dwellings. Usually resident census counts report people according to where they usually live and people who usually live overseas are not included. Census night counts determine the total number of people at the place they were enumerated on census night and this count can include overseas visitors as well as visitors from elsewhere in New Zealand.
What are population counts used for?
Information from the Census of Population and Dwellings is used whenever it is necessary to have detailed information on the distribution of a wide range of socio-economic characteristics of a population. Because the census is the most comprehensive source of information on the New Zealand population at a particular point in time, it is a very powerful tool for analysis.
