What does the Chief Electoral Office do?

The Chief Electoral Office provides a wide variety of resources on the history and administration of elections and voting behaviour in New Zealand.

Resources

Resources available from the Chief Electoral Office include names and maps of current electorates, information on how boundaries are arrived at, the laws relating to registration of parties, electoral obligations, and many other topics of electoral significance. Both national and local government areas are included.

Many of the issues discussed here in the electoral context have wider currency as population issues.

Publications and resources

Publications include:

  • enrolment statistics: general enrolment figures refer to the number of electors registered on the general electoral roll for each electorate

  • election results since 1996 and the results of compulsory retirement savings referendum.
