What does the Department of Labour do?
The Department of Labour (DoL) has a range of responsibilities which link social and economic issues across the whole labour market.
The department is structured into four service groups: Health and safety, employment relations, immigration and labour market information.
The Department has also a sector leadership role for workplace issues and contributes to wider government goals. Key strategic and policy initiatives by the Department are the Workforce Policy, Workplace Policy and Labour Market Strategy.
The current structure of the department replaces the New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS), the Occupational Safety & Health Service (OSH), the Employment Relations Service (ERS), the Community Employment Group (CEG), and the Labour Market Plocy Group (LMPG).
NZIS, OSH and ERS still have separate websites, with a research and publications section but, along with all other DoL material, they can be most easily accessed via the Department of Labour sitemap.
Resources
The Publications list on the DoL website is an increasingly comprehensive list of all available research by all the services of the department.
Department of Labour Research Papers This database contains research and evaluation work undertaken, published or commissioned by the department. Each entry takes the form of an abstract, with a link to the full research report. Research reports can be downloaded free of charge.
For further information, contact the Research and Evaluation section of the Strategy Group.

Migration
Immigration Service
The Immigration Service makes available considerable statistics and regular summary reports of application and approval trends for international travel, permanent migration and long-term migration categories. There have been many changes to policy categories, so long-term time series are limited to very general information.
Labour Market Reports – External Migration Quarterly reports by DoL, based on Statistics New Zealand data, on permanent and long-term migration of people into and out of New Zealand. These reports also discuss how the immigration approvals data relates to general external migration data.
Administrative data
Several areas maintain administrative databases for operational purposes (New Zealand Immigration Service, Community Employment Group, Accident Compensation Corporation, Occupational Safety and Health) which might be accessible for research purposes by negotiation.
