What does the Ministry of Social Development do?


The Ministry of Social Development has primary responsibility for the collection and dissemination of statistics on the payment of New Zealand Superannuation and a range of income support and employment services. MSD also administers databases on student allowances and loans, Veterans and War Pensions, and a range of subsidies.


 

Resources

The Ministry has responsibility for a number of administrative databases and data ‘warehouses’ for its internal use. Access to these databases is restricted. However, output in the form of summary statistics is available on request. Email here for further information.

 

The Statistical Report

Annual report describing the client databases. This contains historical statistical series, and a range of information about the use of financial assistance and employment services. The latest report for the year ended 30 June 2004 places this information into a broader social and population context. Some statistics presented in this report are available for earlier years on request from the Decision Support team of the Ministry of Social Development.

 

The Centre for Social Research and Evaluation

The Centre completes forecasts of benefit and New Zealand Superannuation numbers and expenses twice yearly for the Budget Economic and Fiscal Update and the December Economic and Fiscal Update. Summary information on forecasts.

The Social Report 2004 (10Kb)

Report providing information on the social health and well-being of New Zealand society. Indicators are used to measure levels of well-being, to monitor trends over time, and to make comparisons with other countries. Published by Ministry of Social Development, 2004.

 

Children in New Zealand: Report on Cross-Sectoral Outcome Measures and Targets (278Kb)

An annual report, which focuses exclusively on monitoring progress towards specified targets set in the Strengthening Families Strategy in 1997. Published by the Ministry of Health, 2001. Produced in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Policy, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice, and the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services.
