What does the Ministry of Women's Affairs do?


The Ministry of Women’s Affairs is a policy advice agency which prioritises its work to focus on areas where it can make the most difference to improve women's lives. Its policy work is made up of a balance of:

  • Ministry-led initiatives, for example, gender analysis framework, gender pay gap research, the Time Use Survey, and issues for low income women

  • gender-specific advice that contributes to policy and programme development led by other departments and agencies.

    A tool for policy analysts to use to identify and understand the differences in the lives of women and men, and amongst different groups of women.

     

    New Zealand Now: Women (36Kb)

  • Publication recording aspects of women's lives such as their family situation, educational qualifications, work, and income. The studies draw on the results of the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings and other sources to build a picture of New Zealand in the 1990s. Published by Statistics New Zealand, 1998.

     

    Māori Women: Mapping Inequalities and Pointing Ways Forward (665Kb)

    This report presents a set of gender disparity indicators from six sectors covering  education, employment, income, health, housing and criminal justice and where action is requires to address disparities identified. Published by Ministry of Women's Affairs, 2001.

     

    Māori Women in Focus: Titiro hangai, ka marama (364Kb)

    Report giving an overview of key issues affecting Māori women’s lives in terms of demographic trends, family formations, education and training, work, and income. The Census is used as the primary data source. Joint Te Puni Kōkiri : Ministry of Women's Affairs publication, 1999.

     

    Around the Clock - Findings from the New Zealand Time Use Survey 1998-99

    Report providing a comprehensive analysis from the Time Use Survey to show how patterns of economic and social participation vary between different groups according to sex, age ethnicity, education and family and economic circumstances. Joint Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Statistics New  Zealand project. Published by Statistics  New  Zealand, 2001.

     

    Occupational Patterns for Employed New Zealand Women

    This report looks at occupational employment of New Zealand women using the  2001 Census data. Published by Ministry of Women’s Affairs, 2003.
