In undertaking its advocacy and policy advisory role, the Office for Senior Citizens uses information derived from a range of sources, including the Ministry of Social Development’s Forecasting and Modelling Unit, Statistics New Zealand, the Office of the Retirement Commissioner, the New Zealand Institute for Research on Ageing, and a number of government departments for issue specific data.
The Office has also built up an ‘in-house’ information resource, from national and international sources, on the range of issues affecting older people. The Office keeps up to date with emerging policy issues through its regular communications with older people’s advocacy and service organisations. The Office also generates information about older people’s views and experiences through its 40 Volunteer Community Coordinators.
The Office for Senior Citizens website provides information about the role, functions and structure of the Office, online publications including the New Zealand Positive Ageing Strategy, and associated Action Plans and Annual Reports, the 2001 Status of Older People Report, and links to a range of relevant sites and information sources.
The 2001 Status Report provides summary information on the number and proportion of older people, the age distribution of the older population, gender distribution and ethnic diversity, marital status, income, health, housing, dependency ratios, living circumstances, education, and employment in the pre-retirement years, and older people in rural areas.
