What does Te Puni Kōkiri (Ministry of Māori Development) do?

As the Government's principal adviser on Māori issues, Te Puni Kōkiri's work aims to improve outcomes for Māori and ensure the quality of government services delivered to Māori.

Since Te Puni Kōkiri's inception in 1992, responsibilities have expanded into the areas of service delivery and state sector leadership. Today the department contributes to accelerating Māori development in four specific areas:

  • providing high quality advice to Government

  • working with Māori to establish development targets and build capacity
