The Office of Ethnic Affairs

Information by agency >

What does The Office of Ethnic Affairs do?

The Office of Ethnic Affairs’ role is to provide information and advice about the ethnic sector populations in New Zealand. The sector comprises the 10 percent of the population that identifies with an ethnic group that is different from the majority and is not Māori or Pacific. This includes people who identify with an ethnic group from Asia, Africa, Central and Latin America, Continental Europe and the Middle East; and covers refugees and migrants, as well as people born in New Zealand.

The Office encourages the development of detailed ethnicity data that identifies component groups within larger ethnic groupings. Its experience is that it is only by getting that level of detail in the data that you can start to draw meaningful conclusions, particularly when comparing groups.
