How is international travel and migration defined?

International travel and migration statistics refer to short-term travel and permanent and long-term movements of overseas and New Zealand travellers into and out of New Zealand.

What are international travel and migration statistics used for?

Statistics about short-term international travel (duration of less than one year) measure the level of inbound and outbound tourism. Details of tourism by source and destination countries, travel purpose (holiday, visiting friends and relatives, business, education/medical, conference) and duration of travel give information about tourism.

Statistics about long-term or permanent international migration (duration of one year or more) indicate the number of immigrants and emigrants, including their net effect on the New Zealand population, and describe the characteristics of migrants (age, sex, nationality, birthplace, occupation, source and destination countries).
