What is meant by population structure?

Population structure generally refers to the distribution of a population by age and sex. Groups within a population have different age-sex structures and this affects how groups interrelate.

Population structure changes over time because different numbers of people are born, die or migrate. Moreover, people may change their location, ethnicities, living arrangements and other circumstances. This affects many aspects which influence population structure such as the timing of childbearing or changes in the age structure of migration flows.
