What can population information tell us about unemployment?

People who are unemployed are adults living in New Zealand who are not in paid employment but are available for work and are actively seeking employment.

Population data is used to identify patterns of unemployment by a wide range of parameters such as age, sex, ethnicity, educational status, family role and location. This analysis can identify areas in which problems may exist or issues that may be addressed by policy. Similarly, analysis of trends in unemployment relative to other changes in the population is used to monitor policy performance.
