How is internal migration defined?

Internal migration is the movement of people from one place of residence to another within New Zealand.

What are internal migration statistics used for?

Internal migration statistics are used for analysing urban-rural, inter-regional and intra-regional population movements. Information on internal migration is obtained from the Census of Population and Dwellings as well as from administrative sources.

Internal Migration
This report, published in 2008 by Statistics New Zealand, provides a statistical overview of internal migration in New Zealand. It is based on information from the Census of Population and Dwellings and the Survey of Dynamics and Motivations for Migration in New Zealand. This report contains extensive information on various aspects of internal migration and will continue to be added to and developed over time as a key resource for information on population mobility.

Survey of Dynamics and Motivations for Migration in New Zealand.
The Survey of Dynamics and Motivations for Migration in New Zealand (DMM) investigates reasons for internal migration and provides insights into demographic characteristics of people who have moved or not moved, as well as satisfaction ratings for living conditions. It was conducted as a supplement to the Household Labour Force Survey in the March 2007 quarter.
