Measuring ethnicity of infant and early childhood deaths

A working paper describing some aspects of the demographic characteristics of deaths occurring to people aged under five years is available here for download (pdf format).

Infant Deaths: Demographic Characteristics, Ethnic Reporting (PDF, 186 KB) discusses a range of topics such as birth weight, parental ages and ethnicity.

The paper discusses differences between ethnicities recorded at birth and ethnicities recorded at death. These differences have an effect on demographic indexes, life tables and population estimates and projections. The differences are analysed to determine what, if any, adjustments should be made to ethnic mortality rates to make the rates comparable with other data.
