Statement of Intent: 2009–12

Official statistics are a vital part of a country’s infrastructure. They underpin key central and local government decisions, as well as decisions by businesses, international investors, potential migrants, community groups, and the general public. We must increase the value we get from the Official Statistics System by ensuring these decisions are based on relevant and reliable statistical facts and analysis. To achieve this, my priorities over the next three years are to:

  • Lift New Zealand’s growth and progress by filling critical gaps in the country’s official statistics so that well-informed decisions can be made and progress monitored.
  • Ensure the continued production and quality of existing important official statistics, through the provision of relevant and timely statistics on the economy and society.
  • Continue to realise the benefits to New Zealand from government investment in official statistics, by increasing their availability and use.
  • Reduce costs to businesses and households through initiatives aimed at increasing integration of existing information sources and reducing duplication across government departments.
  • Increase value-for-money by prioritising investment in statistics across government, focusing on system planning and monitoring, and ensuring that statistical considerations are integrated into government decision-making processes.

I look forward to working with Statistics New Zealand over the next three years, to progress these priorities and deliver better, smarter official statistical services.

I endorse the strategic direction outlined in this Statement of Intent as being aligned with the Government’s overall priorities and confirm that the information it contains is consistent with the Government’s policies and performance expectations.
