Completing a survey

Legal requirements

Statistics New Zealand conducts a number of surveys on individuals and about business performance.

As the major producer of official statistics, Statistics NZ is committed to help the government, community organisations, businesses, industry organisations, academics, and others to understand our society and economy and to make key decisions.

Businesses and individuals are selected on a random basis by Statistics NZ to complete surveys. When asked to participate in our surveys, you are required by law to provide information for the purpose of statistical use. For more information refer to the Statistics Act 1975.

Minimising respondent load

The Respondent Load Strategy, published in February 2008, provides a framework for initiatives over the next three to five years that manage and minimise the respondent load associated with Statistics NZ surveys. For businesses, individuals, and communities, the strategy will clarify the expectations placed on them and the value exchange associated with providing data.
